We have had some unsettled weather here in the past week which has made the fishing a little hard to predict. Cold and rainy mornings have given way to sunny afternoons, in most of these instances the fishing can be red hot. The theme of the last week…”you don’t know unless you go”. Weather windows in a rainy or cold weather pattern can produce great fishing opportunities, don’t be discouraged by a bad forecast because more often than not it can mean great fishing. We have been having cold mornings with snow on the highest peaks in the Tetons, no need to get an early start this time of year. Water temperatures have been in the lower 50’s which keep the fish lively and active and the fishing great well into the afternoon. The fly selection here on the Snake has transitioned away from bigger foam flies to smaller mayfly imitations. We have continued to see our “Snake Drake”, the Hecuba, and we are seeing more and more Mahoganys everyday. Use a large size Parachute Adams or Copper Haze when you see these Hecubas. As for the Mahogany, Tilt Wing Mahogany Duns, Extended Body Mahogany both work well. The streamer bite has been good for more experienced fisherman and has turned up some great fish in the past week. The biggest fish on the Snake during the One Fly, a 22inch Cutty guided by WBA Guide Jim Deitz, fell for a Kreelex. We continue to see very large fish eating dry flies, focus on deep pools and runs in the side channels as well as along deep slow banks and the tail-outs of riffles. Look for the fishing to remain solid for the next couple weeks, we have not heard anything about when the river will return to winter flows. Good fishing.
