The good news is the warm weather last weekend gave us some great fishing on the Snake. The bad news is it was so warm, and accompanied by rain that it turned the water off color. We are unsure if run off is on its way, or if the cold temps by the end of the week will give the Snake a chance to clear again. We will just have to wait and see.
Even though it is dirty, it is not running too high to fish. The streamer bite, and nymphing are your best bet, if you just wanted to go fish for a few hours and see what happens. The Skwalas are showing themselves in bigger numbers, and fish were definitely keyed into some of the bigger dry fly patterns over the weekend. I had a few eat the chubby on top Saturday which always helps the winter cabin fever. Flies that worked best were Pat’s Rubber Legs, Zebra Midges, Black Copper Johns, Parachute Midge, Black Chubby Chernobyl and Sparkle Minnows.
We will keep you posted on water conditions, but this current spike will definitely make fishing harder for the time being. Fishing time is just around the corner so be patient. Also, just a few more weeks until our Bakers dozen comes to an end. We still have plenty of good flies to choose from, so don’t miss out.
